Newstead Abbey, best known as the former home of the poet Lord Byron, was originally an Augustinian priory founded by Henry II in about 1170. A small religious community existed there until Henry VIII dissolved the monastery in 1539. In the following year, Henry granted Newstead to the poet's ancestor, Sir John Byron, who converted the priory into a house for his family.

Day 2:After breakfast this morning we visit Newstead Abbey (entrance cost included) Newstead Abbey, best known as the former home of the poet Lord Byron, was originally an Augustinian priory founded by Henry II in about 1170. A small religious community existed there until Henry VIII dissolved the monastery in 1539. In the following year, Henry granted Newstead to the poet''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s ancestor, Sir John Byron, who converted the priory into a house for his family. The gardens and parkland at Newstead Abbey cover more than 300 acres. Newstead Abbey''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s landscape owes much of its beauty to the River Leen, which feeds the lakes, ponds and cascades that ornament Newstead''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s gardens. Some of these water features are believed to have medieval origins as monastic stew ponds, in which fish were bred for food. One is the Eagle Pond, a large rectangular ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''mirror'''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' pond. This takes its name from the priory’s eagle-shaped lectern (now at nearby Southwell Minster) said to have been hidden in or near the pond at the time of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Near the Eagle Pond is the poet Byron''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''s famous monument to his favourite dog, Boatswain, who died of rabies in 1808. This monument stands on the spot which Byron believed to have been occupied by the High Altar of the priory church Returning to the hotel for evening dinner with quiz night to follow and of course the £1 bar (lager/wine) between 8-10pm Day 3:Following breakfast this morning we leave the hotel and visit Denby Potteries (tour cost included) enjoy a unique day out at Denby.
