Hatfield House in Hertfordshire, just 21 miles north of London, is a fine Jacobean House and Garden in a spectacular countryside setting.
Built by Robert Cecil, Ist Earl of Salisbury and Chief Minister to King James I from 1607 to 1611. There is a marvellous collection of pictures, furnishings and historic armour on display The Estate has been in the Cecil family for 400 years, one of England’s foremost political families.
Day 1:
Our journey takes us south with a visit to Hatfield House & Garden, (entrance cost included) Chosen as the home for Henry VIII''''''''s children, Hatfield House is a gem in Hertfordshire''''''''s crown. Visitors can see tapestries, furniture and works of art in the house and explore the extensive gardens. The palatial Jacobean mansion was built between 1607 and 1611 by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, and has remained in the Cecil family ever since. The finely carved staircase is a prime example of Jacobean craftsmanship. The gardens date from the early 17th century and were filled with special European trees and flora that had never been seen before in England. The vast parkland is ideal for summer walks. Don''''''''t miss the oak tree that marks the spot where the young Elizabeth I first heard of her accession to the throne. Arriving at our hotel check in and welcome drinks reception followed by evening dinner with a promotional £1 bar (lager/wine) between 8-10pm.
Day 2:
After breakfast this morning we visit Knebworth House (entrance cost included) Mentioned in the Domesday Book in 1085 as "Chenepeword", meaning a village on a hill, Hertfordshire''''''''s Knebworth House has been in the Lytton family since 1490. Once a huge red-brick Tudor house, it is now a towering gothic mansion. The original red brick building was covered with stucco and had its windows altered to a gothic style by Mrs Elizabeth Bulwer-Lytton in the early 17th century. In an attempt to keep up with the times, she also commissioned the impressive eight towers, battlements and porch, which dramatically transformed the building''''''''s appearance. Returning to the hotel for evening dinner with quiz night to follow and of course the
£1 bar (lager/wine) between 8-10pm.
Day 3:
Following breakfast this morning we leave the hotel and return home via St Albans, a city rich in heritage, with evidence of the pre-Roman, Roman, medieval and the modern. The St Albans of today is based on the medieval town, which grew up around the Abbey, returning home after lunch approx 14.00.
